channel 4 news task


Basic details

1.       Channel 4 news comes on Mon-Fri at 7pm and runs for 55mins.
2.       It was first broadcasted in 1982.
3.       They’ve won the international Emmy award for news in 2014, 2013, 2004; also, British Academy Television Award for Best News Coverage in 2012, 2004, 1996 and British Academy Television Award for Best News and Current Affairs Journalism 1994, 1993.
4.       Channel 4

Presenters

1.       The presenters are Jon Snow, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Demetria Kalodimos and
 Bob Sellers.
2.       Jon Snow is known for wearing bright colours and this communicates to the audience that they are formal but very relaxed about things and are more left wing than right.
3.       They do this to target different ethnicities and to reach out to more people.
4.       The other reporters are used to report other news stories in other countries.
5.       There is a balance between the presenters have both male and female and a British Asian presenter as well.
   
Opening sequence

1.       The very first shot is the main story of the news on the day.
2.       The presenters stand to try and speak to the viewer making the news less formal to others.
3.       The music used is dramatic to show that the news stories used are serious.
4.       They introduce all the stories and also give the timing of the story so if the audience wanted to view a particular one they can just go back at that time and watch it.

Studio mise-en-scene

1.       The audience can see the screens in the studio and the desk behind the presenters.
2.       The presenters are standing up to communicate to the audience in a less formal way to other news channels.
3.       The technology is visible and this is done so the audience can see where the clips from other countries and news stories come from. It also represents the money that channel 4 get from advertisement being spent on the studio to present the news.

4.       The brand colour of Channel 4 News is purple and this is displayed in the intro and in the studio.

How news stories are presented

1.       They usually present a story by using videos from other countries or going under cover and then use the footage taken.
2.       There are interviews that take place when talking about a story and presenters going to other countries. Channel 4 also uses video footage of events that have occurred in other countries.
3.       Channel 4 cover news stories to do with other countries, the Uk, politics and sporting events.
4.       The first way news stories are presented are by conducting a interview between the presenter and whoever they’re interviewing. This engages the audience to keep watching as they can get a professional view on certain topics that someone specialises in. The second way is sending a presenter to another country and seeing what is going on there. This also makes the audience want to carry on watching as they can analyse what’s going on in those countries and how its effecting people.


Audience

1.    The audience is between the ages of 18-30.
2.    People may choose this over other news channels as it is unique to others. These are due  to the different ways of presenting news and are challenging people.
3.    The ways the audience can get involved is by posting comments on YouTube or by twitter where they can get their views across as well.
4.    The uses and gratifications, theorised by Blumler and Katz, for the institution are escapism and surveillance

Institution

  1. Channel 4 is a publicly owned corporation whose board is appointed by OFCOM
  2. Channel 4 also own E4, 4 music, 4 more.
  3. Presents news in a unique way silimar to the channel it's on where programmes that have been on Channel 4 have also been unique compared to channels such as BBC and ITV.

  2.    The website offers news stories for the audience to watch if they've missed out on previous stories.
